ChrysaLabs specialises in soil carbon analysis. We secure the financial value of carbon sequestration projects, bridging the gap between the field and carbon registries (credit-issuing bodies), to ensure that every project becomes a tradable and correctly valued asset. Our approach combines the optimisation of sampling plans with the use of direct measurement probes, all in pursuit of a single objective: an asset that can be defended before the buyer. This methodology safeguards the scientific integrity of the data, an essential prerequisite for high-quality credits and the financial value that the market is prepared to recognise for them.
We are currently looking for a Senior Advisor – Carbon Project Development & PDD to lead strategic advisory and registry-grade project documentation for our clients’ soil carbon projects, from feasibility through credit issuance.
JOB SUMMARY
Our clients increasingly come to us with the questions that sit upstream of measurement: Is this project viable? Under which methodology and registry? What baseline approach, what sampling design, what cost per tonne, and what does it take to get through validation?
We are formalizing that strategic advisory service and building in-house capability to author registry-grade project documentation. This is the person who will own it.
You will work cross-functionally with our science, MRV, and client project teams — translating agronomic reality and field data into a defensible project design, and then into a PDD that survives a VVB.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic advisory to clients
- Run feasibility and go / no-go assessments on prospective soil carbon projects: eligibility, additionality, practice change, baseline options, and credit-volume potential.
- Build the financial analysis that carries the go / no-go recommendation: full cost stack (MRV and sampling, aggregation and enrolment, grower incentives, validation and verification, registry and buffer costs), revenue and price scenarios, cash-flow phasing across the crediting period, cost per tonne and break-even, and sensitivity analysis on the variables that actually move the outcome — sampling intensity, uncertainty deduction, enrolment and attrition, practice-adoption rates.
- Present that analysis to the people who decide: client CFOs, investment committees and financing partners, with assumptions documented well enough to survive due diligence.
- Recommend the methodology and registry pathway (Verra VM0042, CAR Soil Enrichment Protocol, Gold Standard SOC, EU CRCF, Isometric, national schemes) and defend the trade-offs to client leadership.
- Design the project architecture: project boundary, stratification and grouping logic, crediting and monitoring period structure, sampling and re-measurement cadence, uncertainty-deduction strategy.
- Advise on data infrastructure and evidence chains: activity data, practice attestations, land tenure, grower agreements, so the project is still auditable five years from now.
- Act as trusted counsel through the client’s own decision cycle: workshops, steering committees, board-level readouts.
PDD authoring and registry documentation
- Write and own project descriptions / PDDs, monitoring reports, and methodology deviation or revision requests, end to end.
- Assemble and quality-control the supporting evidence pack: quantification workbooks, sampling design memos, model calibration and validation documentation, uncertainty calculations, QA/QC records.
- Manage the validation and verification cycle: scope and select VVBs, prepare site visits, respond to and close out corrective action requests, clarification requests, and non-conformities.
- Shepherd listing, registration and issuance through registry portals, and hold the timeline against the client’s commercial commitments.
- Build the reusable tools (templates, drafting guides, evidence checklists, agentic tooling) so that the tenth PDD takes a fraction of the effort of the first.
Methodology intelligence and internal enablement
- Track methodology, standard and policy developments (Verra, CAR, Gold Standard, Isometric, ICVCM-CCP labelling, EU CRCF) and translate them into concrete implications for clients and for our product roadmap.
- Represent ChrysaLabs in public consultations, technical working groups and methodology revision processes.
- Work with our science team on how measurement design, digital-soil-mapping constraints and model choices flow through to creditable outcomes — and feed field reality back into our methodology positions.
- Coach client-facing colleagues so that methodology fluency is not concentrated in one head.
Commercial support
- Scope advisory engagements, size the effort, price them, and write proposals and statements of work.
- Support pre-sales conversations as the technical authority in the room.
- Contribute thought leadership: technical notes, webinars, conference presentations.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in agronomy, environmental science, soil science, engineering, or a related field.
- 5-8 (or more) years of experience in carbon project development, MRV, or environmental consulting, including direct authorship of PDDs or equivalent registry documentation.
- Fluent English required; French is a strong asset given our Montreal-based team.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Demonstrated hands-on experience preparing PDDs, monitoring reports, and methodology deviation or revision requests.
- Deep working knowledge of soil carbon methodologies and registries, validation/verification (VVB) processes, and uncertainty quantification.
